Déjà vu
- The core design of the game
We chose the verb “rescue” and theme “Psychedelic Trip”
This is a roguelike game, the player will control the main character - Hammer to rescue her daughter Dorothy. The player will defeat enemies, collect things, meet other roles and find out the truth through 4 crazy trips (4 levels).
In every level, there is a new character that can be unlocked when players get all the collections required. Then the player can use the new characters to continue the new adventure with their new special abilities.
Since there are 4 characters, players can switch them during the game anytime. Choosing the right character for the right enemy at the right level is fun. What's even better, players can immediately switch to another character while releasing the function of current characters, using their skills to work with the released skills, which can produce unexpected surprises.
- A description of the game's world, and how it was invented
World:
There is a criminal called Hammer, he woke up in a cell in a prison without any memory. However, he still remembered that he had to find out and protect his daughter Dorothy. For this reason, he had to get out of prison as soon as possible. But he felt there was something wrong during his weird trips and there were 3 strange people he met, telling him something different from his fatigue memory. Then he found out the truth is not like what he thought about.
Method:
The story was inspired by the word "pir" of our choice. Based on this word, we combine character switching and skill pairing with roguelike games to create this weird game world.
We cut the story into several small pieces and put them into every information of collection thing and dialogues. With these texts and small animations at the start and the end of the game, players can piece together a complete story.
We've also added clues to some details to suggest player stories, such as the character's name, prop design, enemy identity, and so on.
Story:
Despot Hammer: Father, Justice who accepted bribes, domestic violence
Dorothy Hammer: Mother, dessert maker
Buskin Hammer: Kid (the player-controlled character)
Dorothy has long suffered from domestic violence and has been in hiding for the sake of young Buskin. In order to get rid of her husband, secretly gathered evidence of Despot's bribery. An in-depth investigation revealed that Despot was not just an umbrella for corruption, but even arms and drug trafficking. In order to better control his wife and the relationships behind her, Despot forced her to be given a lethal injection. After years of high mental stress and substance abuse, Dorothy developed a severe mental illness and began taking drugs, but always took care of Buskin. The young Buskin looked at what had happened, looked at his mother, who was blocking himself from his father, and grew malicious, and he looked at his mother, who was becoming more and more ill, determined to make her father pay the price in her hysterical cry.
On Christmas Eve, Buskin opened the door for candy merchants to come to the disguised drug dealer and trade with Dorothy. Despot forced Dorothy to inject again after dinner, and Buskin lifted a handgun stolen from a drug dealer, ending his father's life. Unfortunately, the mother's room for Christmas snacks was thrown into chaos during the parents' argument, and the home was covered in dust. Among the missing went off of the pistol, a loud bang broke out and the fire began to burn. After the injection, his mother fell asleep, buskin was unable to save her mother and watched a fire burn all his sanity - personality split.
Hammer: Think he is guilty.
Gandalf: I hope I can stop the fire, and I hope it's not myself who can set it on fire
008: Hope can help the mother collect the father's evidence of guilt so that the two are out of the father's control
Willy Wonka: The flowery green pills my mother used to eat were candy, and it was the candy merchant who came to visit at Christmas
